Great teachers with a great interface make Knewton the knew standard of GMAT Prep!

Knewton is a unique platform which combines a virtue classroom with an individual experience. After completing my Knewton course, I feel as if I have a personal relationship with my instructors, and I am confident I am a better test-taker from their instruction. Be careful, the practice tests have a difficult grading structure and often under-represent your actual score; plus there is a lot of work with a Knewton course. But take the time, and see the results because it is a great asset to students serious about improving their GMAT score.

Excellent teachers and method of teaching

September 21, 2011

I've attended the courses on demand, that means I did not attend any live session.
This gave me the opportunity to study according to my schedule, and whenever I did not understand any concept I could pause it and see it again.
The classes were wonderful, not boring at all. I learned how to approach almost every verbal and quantitive exercise and I learned a lot of new concepts.
By repeating and explaining the important concepts on several different lessons, they "put" the important ideas inside my head so that I could answer the questions on the prompt in less time.
What I would add to the course are more classes of the Essay part, there is just one in the last lesson and I think that is an important issue.

The quality of the program exceeded my expectations. The teachers were great and I felt prepared on test day. In my opinion, I think the program should be longer. it should at least include more problems to work on. I feel like once I started reviewing for test day, it was a challenge for me to find more practice sets to spend time on.

Comprehensive, flexible, great!

Identify:
The first thing you do on the test is identify what type of problem you're faced with, what is its structure, what is actually asked and what types of answers you are dealing with. I think correctly identifying this stuff is extremely important for the time management on the actual test. During Knewton classes we learned how to do all that, and what I liked was that the instructors are very concerned about the fact that there students understand how to perform the identification of the problem correctly, quickly and efficiently.

Approach:
Another thing that impressed me during the classes at Knewton was that the instructors spent a great amount of time on teaching how to APPROACH the problem, and I really think that knowing this is a great advantage that helps to crack the GMAT. Knowing different approaches gives you the possibility to solve the problem in different ways and to save time on actual test. One can know a bunch of formulas and grammatical rules, but without knowing the correct approach he can fail to answer the question or spend too much time on doing the math. I think Knewton is really keen on teaching some very useful approaches, and after learning all of them the students are given the possibility to apply them on some while very GMAT-like homework assessments.

Flexibility:
I really liked the structure of the course as a whole. You can attend classes online and participate in live discussions, if you missed a class you always can watch it on demand and if you have some questions it's possible to send a question directly to teachers or to participate in the discussion in Knewton Support site where each question of the curriculum is discussed among students and Knewton academic team. I found Knewton Support very useful, since you I was not always satisfied with the explanations given to the answers of the questions.

Some criticism:
Throughout the curriculum you get two tough challenges in each section (Verb and Quant) - a Mid-tem chalenge and a Final challenge. I found some disbalance between the types of problems we were given in these challenges and the ones that we studied throughout the course. These challenges are really tough, and I think that it would be useful to spend some more time on these difficult types of questions during the classes.
In general, I'm really glad I spent 1,5 month studying at Knewton, and thank you, guys, for helping me raise my score to 700!

KNEWTON-THE BEST WAY TO GO!

The first time I took the GMAT, I ended up with a score of 640- 49 on the quant section and just 28 on the verbal. After the knewton course I improved 70 points with 49 on quant and 38 on the verbal. I'd recommend the knewton course to all those who want to excel on the GMAT. The course structure is absolutely brilliant and the instructors are extremely lively and keep people hooked on to the class till the end. The practice questions after each session make sure that all the concepts covered in the session are properly understood and applied. The concept notes Knewton provides are extensive and detailed, and any doubts that remain even after the session and the tests can be cleared.

In short THE BEST GMAT PREP COURSE YOU CAN GET!
Thank You KNEWTON!

Highly Recommend the Knewton Prep Course

September 6, 2011
  • Teacher: Adam Sticklor & Chris Wu

  • GMAT ScoresBefore: 650 After: 740

I had taken the GMAT once before, shortly after graduating from college. I studied a bit on my own, read through a prep book, and achieved a 650 on my first attempt. This past spring, I decided to get serious about grad school once again. I, for one, tend to procrastinate, so I decided to go with a prep course, and settled on Knewton for a number of reasons, not least of which was the fact that they offer a money-back guarantee if your GMAT score doesn't improve by 50 points.

First of all, I really enjoyed the flexibility that the course afforded me. There are a number of sections running simultaneously, which allowed me to choose the most convenient for me, on weekends, as I work 60+ hours a week. The classes are also available on demand, should you ever miss one. Office hours are offered frequently for additional help. The instructors and TA's are incredibly responsive, and do a fantastic job of engaging the student throughout each class.

The Knewton software is fantastic as well in that it allows you to view your progress graphically, so you can determine where you are versus where you should be and target those areas you need to work on. The practice tests, and accompanying question explanations, were incredibly helpful in guiding my study.

After I finished the Knewton course, I took another 4-6 weeks to do some independent review and focused study on my weakest areas. When I sat for the exam, I felt much more comfortable and confident than I had without the course, and I ended up getting a 740, which put me in the 97th percentile! I honestly can't thank the professors enough. This course is absolutely worth it and I recommend it for anyone looking to really boost their scores.

I liked Knewton's flexibility. There's live classes, recorded live classes, and on-demand video lessons. Their website has all kinds of information, which can be good if you can figure out how to navigate it and make use of all the material available to you. They have 6 CATs, but I still did other free CATs from other companies + the official practice CATs from MBA.com

I got a great deal on this course ...it was on sale one weekend for $399 so I immediately purchased the class. The best part about the course is that it is located in a virtual classroom. You never have to leave the comfort of your own home, worry about traffic, et cetera. Another great thing about the course is that it enables one to work at his or her own pace. Also, you may revisit lessons as many times as you'd like. It's a wonderful course. Thank you Knewton for all of your help! A great course for a small price!

Efficient and effective prep course

August 31, 2011
  • Teacher:
  • Recommended forVerbal: Yes  Math: Yes
  • GMAT ScoresBefore: N/A After: 730

Let me start by saying that I am 42 years old, which is to say that I'm a long way out from standardized testing in general and the basic math tested in the quantitative portion of the GMAT in particular. I've been a successful academic research professor at a top-10 medical school for a while now, but have begun to contemplate a second act and perhaps going back to school to get an MBA.

Knowing that the GMAT is a requirement for even for most Executive MBA programs I registered to sit the GMAT. Not understanding just how removed I was from the material being tested and not wanting to waste time, I signed up with only 4 weeks to prepare. I registered for the Knewton test prep on-demand 26 days before my test day. When I took the diagnostic GMAT I scored a rather disappointing 580. If I do return to do an MBA, I would want to attend a top-10 school, so a 700+ score was my minimum goal. 20 years ago I was generally 99th percentile on standardized tests, but I had simply not anticipated the challenge presented by basic algebra (factorization, prime number, polynomial equations etc). What math I do use now is more typically Bayesian network analysis, differential equations etc., and while that is more "complex", the "simple" math I now found presented a challenge.

In 4 weeks I was able to complete only 6 of the 13 Knewton sessions and only 4 of the 6 suggested practice GMATs but I found that I was already beginning to transition from answering the questions to seeing through the questions the way an early Knewton lecture suggests allows one to "destroy the GMAT". I certainly wasn't there yet, but the Knewton system was very good at moving me towards that in a relatively short period of time.

Test day arrived and I scored a respectable 730 (96th percentile). There were two questions that I immediately realized I had answered incorrectly after confirming the answer, but that's the risk with this type of test where you cannot go back. I am quite sure that if I'd had more time to prepare and to finish the Knewton course my score would have continued to move up. My weakness is still the quantitative section, despite my actually being very strong at this in real-life, essentially reflecting the specific areas of basic algebra and geometry tested by the GMAT that are so far removed from anything I now use. This is also where Knewton helped me the most, moving my score from 31 on the diagnostic to 45 on test-day.

With help from the Knewton course I am now in a position to apply to Booth or Kellogg if, in the final analysis, I decide that this is a path I wish to take. The Knewton system of learning through testing and retesting with detailed explanations of errors was very much what I needed. I was able to skip over lectures in areas I was comfortable and quickly identify and focus on my weaknesses. At least for me this was likely the most time efficient and effective way to prepare for the GMAT. I would certainly recommend Knewton particularly to anyone going back to GMAT years or decades out of school. If you are a quick study this is a program that won't waste your time.

Knewton's is an excellent course. There lectures are extremely well crafted and to the point. The classes are engaging, and I learned a lot of new and important stuff from them.

The teachers do a great job at drilling the concepts right in. Knewton's verbal is pretty awsome as it does a wonderful job at identifying the most tested concepts on the exam (especially in SC) and teach you how to attack questions of each type. Same with quants but I believe you have to practise a lot simultaneously as you can master the section only and only with sufficient practice.
Well that said, I owe my present score to the wonderful course 'Knewton' and suggest it to anybody who is having difficulty in reaching the goal score.
3 cheers for team Knewton :)

Harder than real GMAT

August 29, 2011
  • Teacher: Dave, Jen, Rich

I had never taken the GMAT before starting this course, so I didn't know what to expect. I thought this course is well worth its price. It has a lot of content even after you finish the regular coursework. Also, the extra practice problems are harder than the real GMAT so it is very beneficial. The teachers know a lot about the subject, although sometimes the classes go over concepts that are slightly too basic.

Knewton helped me a lot. You can go through the course at your own pace, and for me that was very helpful since I work full time. There were problems with the website a couple of times but I think they are working on that.

I got a 720 in the GMAT, and I studied with Knewton only. (and took the official practice GMAT tests of course).

Knewton helped raise my score from 700 to 760

Overall: I thought Knewton's program was comprehensive, effective, entertaining, and rigorous enough

Pros: Good teachers, helpful explanations for tricky concepts, great flexibility of online classes, the homework assignments and resources were helpful

Cons: No quiz bank, weak essay tutorial

I purchased the all-access Knewton program which included the "live" online classes but didn't end up attending a single live class - I took them all on demand because I liked that schedule flexibility. The teachers were uniformly good. Well qualified, well spoken, and even entertaining.

I liked that classes were broken down into two 90 minute sections (verbal / math) so that I could fit a segment or two in before/after work without having to dedicate a full 3 hours. The resources and assignments were helpful and just rigorous enough. Not too much time, and not too little. I work decently long hours but was still completed the course in under six weeks. I didn't kill myself, but I put in a lot of time.

The only real shortcoming was that Knewton doesnt have a quiz bank. They have a content/concept library but the concepts link back to the quizzes that you have already taken. Further problems that explore the concepts are not provided. I knew that I had to work on my math score more than my verbal so I supplemented Knewton's course with Sackman's book Total GMAT Math. That book was generally helpful and offered a number of challenging questions that dealth with very specific topics so it was useful in conjunction with the Knewton course. I found the book's explanations of approaches to rates and a couple other topics useful.

I took the GMAT over 2 years ago and got 700 . This was on the lower end of my practice average, but the variance of my practice scores was high. This time around, I scored a 760 which was on the higher end of practice scores, but my consistency improved dramatically (thanks in part to Knewton, I am sure)

Full breakdown of scores:

Actual GMAT 2009: 700 overall (Q: 43, V: 42)
2011 Knewton #1 Diagnostic: 700 overall (Q: 42, V: 45)
2011 Knewton #2: 720 overall (Q: 46, V: 43)
2011 Knewton #3: 760 overall (Q: 46, V: 49)
2011 Knewton #4: 740 overall (Q: 48, V: 43)
2011 Knewton #5: 740 overall (Q: 45, V: 49)
2011 Knewton #6: 760 overall (Q: 46, V: 49)
2011 MBA.com GMATPrep Official Practice Test (day before actual GMAT): 770 overall (not sure about scores but 9 wrong on quant and 1 wrong on verbal)

I also like the fact that the homework from each lesson was targeted specifically for what was just learned. It was very time consuming, but I felt like I was learning. However after completing the course, my score did not actually improve. It didn't work for me, but maybe it will work for you.

I have just finished my last knewton session and the journey has been great. Although I have not given the GMAT yet, I have progressed by almost 100 points(600 to 710) on my Knewton CATS.
Knewton does a great job at clarifying basic concepts and grounding you in the GMAT way of thinking. The tutors are great and really know what they are talking about. Although I expected the course to be more adaptive, because that is how knewton promotes itself. But I did not really find it all that adaptive.

None the less I think knewton worked for me and really got my performance up and hopefully it will translate in a great GMAT score. I would recommend it to anyone who will start from the very basics and build from the ground up. It is also good for people working because of its flexibility.

I am a lot more about my GMAT prep, all thanks to knewton!!

Ok, let start by saying that i searched all courses before i picked this one, and i couldn't be happier.

I took the on Demand course, and i really love the spirit of the teachers, i mean they give you the information, but they can't help themselves to a few jokes in the middle, which makes the overall experience great. I am akin the gmat in 3 weeks, and hopefully i can report an improved score, but i already feel myself mastering new concepts that i didn't even know before.

I would recommend this course to anyone who is interested in achieving a higher score in their GMAT.
