I have had great experience with Knewton course. Eventhough, my score didn't improve considerably, I found their course to be very effective and provided me well round experience. One can finish the preparation with in 3 to 4 weeks and best part is the recorded sessions. You can view them at your own convenience which is fantastic to improve week areas.

I recommend them for others.

I enjoyed the instructors very much. The were very knowledgeable and provided great structure on how to tackle GMAT problems. The best feature of Knewton is that classes can be taken over and over again. Kewton's smart software system enables its users to track progress which is a great motivator for the students

Knewton is rad

I learned everything I needed to know about the GMAT from Knewton, and i couldn't be happier with my performance. When taking the actual GMAT, I was familiar with every question type I was confronted with. Plus I found all the Knewton practice quizzes and tests quite a bit harder than the real thing, which made my score on test day that much more satisfying. I scored between 580 and 640 consistently on Knewton practice tests, and on my first try at the real GMAT got a 710 (46Q/75%, 41V/92%). Although I'm considering retaking the test to up my quant score, that's not too shabby for having not done math in 8 years.

As for the Knewton teachers, mine were young, intelligent, engaging and pretty hilarious at times. You'd be surprised at how much class participation helps as well in the live sessions.

One of the more helpful parts of the program for me near the end of my studies was the concept queue - the program keeps track of what concepts you haven't mastered yet by analyzing your answers to quizzes and tests.

Personally, I chose Knewton after reading rave reviews and comparing the program to much more expensive classroom options. I work full time, travel a lot and live in the burbs, so I needed the flexibility of taking classes remotely and being able to make up classes if I missed one. I could see the Knewton format being a problem for someone that isn't self motivated and disciplined, but for me Knewton was the perfect format at a great price.

The teaching style is very effective, along with the course material. Knewton breaks down the GMAT's structure and teaches techniques to maximize results. I've found all of Knewton's teaching staff to be very knowledgeable, friendly, and prompt with responses. Also, Knewton provides some feedback on the MBA admissions process, even though this expertise is not advertised. I'm very happy with my Knewton purchase, and I'd recommend the Knewton MBA course to anyone!

Without a doubt, this course program was A+! Not only were the online classes valuable and challenging, but, the support was phenomenal. I increased my score exponentially. In fact, I wish I could have this resource at hand for much longer.
This is the way to do it!
My only criticism would be that there is no 'after the gmat' courses that continue to review the material. Then again, that's not what I paid for and that's not their business... Perhaps that's an opportunity to expand?
I wish you all the best Dave and Stephen and Knewton!

Knewton worth the money

I was attracted to Knewton because of the low price, scheduling flexibility, and 50 point score improvement guarantee. The program was a great value to me as it increased my score from the diagnostic 100 points, well above their 50 point improvement guarantee, and the online practice questions, tests, and quizzes are set up the exact way the actual GMAT was - right down to the question structure. In my mind, there is no better GMAT preparation program.

Knewton GMAT Prep Course Review

September 30, 2010
  • Teacher: Adam Sticlor, Jen Rugani, Chris Wu

Hello,

I have taken the Knewton's GMAT Prep course.

I would like to start with - 'why I selected Knewton'?
I am a fresh college grad with major in Computer Science & Electronics and I am looking forward to join 'pre-experience' masters in order to help my career take-off. And the top universities I am looking forward to apply need GMAT.

From here the search for best GMAT Course started. I was working so going to a particular place for eg. London etc. was not an option for me. I needed some reputed, well-established prep company who will provide me with a top-quality study materials (primarily) + teaching (not very important for me). Infact, I was looking for the materials package only i.e. no classroom teaching (online or on-campus).

First I searched in on Google and Knewton came on the top. I never heard about this company earlier so my first impression was - one more company in the market providing 'average' course with teachers below average who are not passionate about teaching.

I went to several reputed company's website and compared the classroom and materials only package prices. When I compared all of them incl. Knewton then I found Knewton to have the lowest price. Then I really became interested and researched more about the company and realised how good it actually is. Hence, I thought of giving myself a chance with Knewton and rest is 'history'.

The technology deployed by Knewton is absolutely world-class. The technology of 'adaptive learning' is very exciting. The system actually encourages me to solve more, study more and then again solve some more and see how I am progressing with my GMAT Prep. It's better than ''any classroom program''. Classroom program or a general online teaching can never be this helpful and encouraging. GMAT is difficult and one needs to be encouraged and there is no better platform than Knewton's for it.

I can just go on and on about the teachers. The teachers are absolutely world-class. They aren't just passionate but I guess they have defined 'passion' and now set the standard very high for anyone and everyone who wants to come into the teaching. They are more like friends who genuinely are interested in student's progress and give us tips and techniques all the time. Also, their tips and techniques are very valuable and appropriate because they have appeared for GMAT exam and have done extremely well in it. The teaching assistant who's also online with the teacher helps students in answering any queries/questions they have whilst the class is going on and there is always an opportunity to raise hand (ya!) and ask questions. For someone like me - who was hesitant in asking questions in the first class, the TA actually asked me every now and then if I comfortable with the speed and teaching etc.

I recommend Knewton course to everyone who's serious about the GMAT Prep. This is not for everyone certainly. You need to put a lot of hard work with the expert guidance of Knewton faculty to get the desired result. I wish I had the technology and teaching support like that of Knewton in my previous education, I would have done much better!

Love Knewton..

Thanks

Great online test prep for someone who has been out of school for a long time

I took the diagnostic GMAT test on the Knewton site and did not do well. After the classes and taking the two practice exams on the GMAT prep software I did a lot better than my initial score (670). Not what I wanted but close enough. I am reviewing sentence correction and am planning on taking the GMAT again. Knewton's course is not only great for initial prep but also for those who may have to re-take the GMAT. All of the old classes are indexed and available for watching anytime you are available.

Great instructors combined with convienience of online format

Knewton is excellent if you are the type of person who doesn't like combing through a huge book and prefer reading from a computer screen. Knewton gives you the flexibility to attend the courses live and/or watch them on demand. Thus you don't have to worry about missing a class. Also I didn't have to spend time traveling to a location for class and I didn't have to carry a book around with me allowing me the opportunity to study at work or at home whenever I had internet access.
The instructors are excellent. They have a genuine interest in seeing you do well and are able to share a number of tips and strategies that are beneficial.
My only criticism might be their CAT. I got a 710 on the actual test but wasn't scoring near that on any of my 5 practice CATs. However, I'd rather be surprised with a high score than score lower than my practice exams. At the testing facility the proctor told me a few Kaplan students had left disappointed that day after scoring lower than their practice exams.

Great course but techincal difficulties made learning frustrating

September 28, 2010
  • Teacher: David Gordon (Verbal) and Christopher Wu (Quant)
  • Recommended forVerbal: Yes  Math: Yes
  • GMAT ScoresBefore: 490 After: 600

Overall the course was very good. I learned new strategies to use when approaching the GMAT. The verbal section was the most helpful. David Gordon was patient and explained different ways to narrow down answer choices. The quantitative section wasn't as helpful as I thought it would be, but I think this was because of the teacher. Christopher Wu isn't a very patient person when it comes to teaching. He didn't understand that not all of the students understood the solution problems. He didn't offer very many explanations when asked questions from students. Luckily Knewton allows students to changes sections which also changes teachers. I highly recommend this option.

Another issue I had was with the technical problems of the live video stream. During at least 4 of my classes there were techinical glitches where I was unable to hear or see the teachers. The class was stopped until they came back online. This became extremely annoying over time. One of my classes was delayed for 30 mins over the scheduled time. The quizzes that are available on the website also have a few techincal glitches every so often, but they are not as bad as the live video.

I really liked the course and the teachers. I have and will continue to recommend this course to friends and co-workers. Also the price of the course was very reasonable compared to other GMAT prep courses.

I would recommend Knewton to anyone. The on-line classroom format, which made me nervous prior to starting the course, was actually great. the live video feed of the teacher, on-line notes that they could edit, and the classroom chat made it easy and fun to participate. Adam himself was very engaging and had me looking forward to class (well, almost!). The price was right as well.

Great value, good class, needs CAT improvements

September 12, 2010
  • Teacher: Bridigette Crowe, Allison
  • Recommended forVerbal: Yes  Math: Yes
  • GMAT ScoresBefore: 570 After: 670

I took a Princeton Review course in April 2010 and then took the exam June 2010 with a score of 570, which was well below what I was expecting. A little confused, I did some research and decided that Knewton would be a good way for me to go, especially with its flexibility in watching lectures and moving ahead if you want.

Math-
My teacher was Bridigette and she was great. As an engineer, I have a strong quant foundation and I was less concerned about this section. However, Bridigette taught some unique approaches to certain problems that really helped me with my timing. Highly recommend her. And the course I think definitely helped me improve my math score especially with timing, which allowed me speed through easier problems and spend more time on the difficult ones.

As for the math content, it is pretty good, but could be better. I feel like Knewton either would copy OG problems and change the numbers or would make the calculations much more difficult. The actual GMAT rarely makes you do difficult calculations.

My other beef with Knewton Math is with their CATs. The first three were fine, but the last two were all over the place. One of the exams I only missed 4 out of 37 and only scored 47. On the GMATPrep, I missed 7 and scored 50. On my last CAT, I missed 9 problems, several of which were very difficult and scored 40 on the Math. They claim their algorithm is fine, but it really is not.

It really doesn't matter that much though, and so I don't want to deter others from taking this course. Just because the CATs are poor doesn't mean the course is. Just be sure that you are understanding the content, are improving your timing and are getting better.

Verbal-
My instructor was Allison. She was pretty good, but not great. She would often make mistakes when teaching, and would select the wrong answers. Not a huge deal, everyone is a little dyslexic sometimes. However, I felt like she wasn't the best teacher. She didn't have that teaching skill to make concepts stick. I had a one hour private session with Chris Wu and the differences between the two was apparent. Chris was great.

As for content, I felt like it was very good. I definitely learned 1000% more from Knewton than I did from Princeton Review (which is awful btw). They teach all the basics, and some nifty tricks come test time. However, they definitely lack in the more difficult verbal problems. When I took the GMAT this weekend, I definitely felt that on the whole, the problems were more difficult than what Knewton teaches, especially CR. I did very well in my prep in CR, both with Knewton and the OGs, but found the actual GMAT CRs to be more difficult.

The CATs seem to be pretty good on the Verbal Side

Overall-
-For being probably the cheapest test prep company, it's definitely worth the money. My score definitely went up because of Knewton. To what extent, I don't know.
-Don't trust the CATs, just trust whether you are understanding the content
-Teachers are really good on Knewton
-Flexibility is awesome, especially working full time
-Lots of good information and problems to choose from
-Don't go with Princeton Review!!!!

Also, just remember to do problems outside of the class. This class alone won't drastically improve your score. You need to supplement with OG problems and put in extra time with your weaknesses.

Good luck!

Good deal

September 10, 2010
  • Teacher: Bridgidette and Allison
  • Recommended forVerbal: Yes  Math: Yes
  • GMAT ScoresBefore: N/A After: 730

So just to preface this, I studied independently for the GMAT over about half a year (focusing almost entirely on quant, since I was an English major) before signing up for Knewton. I actually couldn't get up the courage to even take the exam because I felt unprepared. So I hopped onto the forums and mulled over things people were saying about different courses.

It came down to Manhattan GMAT vs. Knewton. Ultimately, I signed up for Knewton because (a) I got a sweet deal off of a promo they did ($345!) and (b) I wanted to try out their "adaptive learning system." I got a bit freaked out when I started the course because the material seemed so much easier than what I had been studying off of the MGMAT books. And it kind of remained that way throughout the course.

If you've ever taken a Knewton CAT and compared it to a MGMAT CAT, the difference is astounding, both in the level of difficulty and in the scoring algorithm. My scores were kind of all over the place with the Knewton CATs, and I was kind of iffy when the diagnostic score that would determine the baseline score for my 50-pt money-back guarantee ended up to be the lowest score I had ever gotten (including the first test I took cold) and ever would get. I promptly contacted their people about letting me retake the exam, but they ended up telling me they would up my guarantee because they felt it more important for me to save the CATs for later to maximize their effectiveness. In the end, they seemed to show me that they really wanted to see me succeed, and I was satisfied.

Overall, I think the course is well-taught and the teachers very helpful. It's great being able to ask questions of the TA while the teacher continues with the lesson. There were times when things went a bit too quickly, but you can always access the lessons on demand or email questions in. They are pretty good about responding to questions, though they did leave me hanging right before the exam. But understandable considering the volume of emails they must get. They would respond with in-depth explanations of each question I had. I definitely felt well-supported in that regard.

Knewton covers most of the basics but is weaker on some of the tougher stuff (in quant). But then again, I hear that MGMAT overprepares you, and there seems to be some truth to that from my experience. I was kind of worried that there would be tough questions I didn't know on the test, but it turned out to be pretty manageable. I thought the verbal reviews were quite thorough and helpful, considering I hadn't really prepared for that section prior to the class.

So in regards to my initial reasoning behind choosing Knewton, I would say that (a) it was definitely worth the investment to have a team like Knewton on your side and supporting you through the sometimes-lonesome GMAT-studying process (esp since I got 30 pts higher than my guarantee!) and (b) the adaptive learning wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Or maybe I just didn't make use of it. I kind of expected to have extra practice questions pop up based on my weak areas, but it seems to just be a list of problem areas which always seemed too long to tackle. Oh, but the concept videos are pretty helpful.

Oh, and now that I'm done with the test, I've also been receiving notices about free MBA-related webinars that they or their partners are hosting, which is an added bonus. Oh, and a feature I did not take advantage of is their email support for the AWA essays. I sort of didn't study too much that because I ran out of time, but Knewton says you can send them essays to grade, which I thought was a sweet idea if you're looking for that kind of help!

Oh, and one more tip: Give yourself ample time after the course to review independently with OG, send in questions, take GMAT Prep over, and practice essays. I felt rushed leaving less than two weeks between the end of my class and the actual exam. And that's even with the half a year of studying prior to Knewton!

Beyond Expectations

  • GMAT ScoresBefore: N/A After: 750

I would highly recommend Knewton for GMAT prep. They cost half as much as most of the other courses and are the only class with a 50-point improvement guaranteed! They'll even guarantee that on previous GMAT scores!

I got a 640 on Knewton's diagnostic test which Knewton and I turned into a 750 on the actual exam! The class is fairly fast paced, and make sure that you have a reliable internet connection if you sign up, as the classes all stream online. Also ensure that you are the kind of person who can pay attention to an online course for 3 hours at a time.

Again, the class is pretty fast paced but very effective at covering commonly tested topics. They also have a charting section which breaks down your progress in all of the common Quant and Verbal categories. I think they make the practice problems and tests a little harder than the real test. The highest I got on the Knewton tests was a 690, and ended up getting 60 points higher than that on the actual GMAT.

My teachers were excellent. I will like to take a moment and mention that Dave Ingber is one of the best verbal instructors out there. His SC, RC and CR lessons are somethings I waited for. Other Knewton instructors are good too. Practice questions were usually 600-700 level questions, so I felt that questions were not very challenging. The Knewton CAT's are absolutely unrealistic - the quant questions were not up to the mark and the verbal questions were simpler than the GMAT exam. But for the content of the teaching I will have to give full marks to them. They did a good job.

Best in the GMAT town!

After getting bitten by worst course in the GMAT town, I opted for KNEWTON few weeks back and I have attended the first 3 classes of Knewton and I?m writing this with my experience till now.

Teaching style:

Though Knewton teaches through online, but till now I never felt that I?m not class. Teachers are helping and try to solve each and every problem you face in class effectively.

I really liked Knewton. It gave me the flexibility to study at my own pace. It was extremely convenient and offered really good resources. It's also nice that you can watch all of the classes over again for the whole year.

Study material:

There are more than 3400 questions to be solved in knewton course! 5 CATs nearer to the real GMAT. Knewton has good feature of pretest and retest (after the class) to know what you have gained in the class. The whole course consists of watching videos (live or pre-recorded) taking quizzes, doing homework, taking assignments; there is much to do with Knewton. I'm loving it!

Moreover, the questions are standardized and near to the real GMAT questions. Knewton has really a great staff supporting you all the time and responding to your emails within less than an hour! Yes, I got replies of my queries in less than an hour.

Knewton's 50 point money back guarantee is one of the best things of course. Knewton simple rocks!

Knewton did for me what Kaplan couldn't!

August 18, 2010
  • Teacher: Jen & Adam
  • Recommended forVerbal: Yes  Math: Yes
  • GMAT ScoresBefore: 510 After: 630

The first time I took the GMAT, I prepared extensively with the Kaplan online course. At the beginning of that course I scored 510 on the diagnostic test and then later got a 510 on the GMAT (I was getting scores around 615 on the Kaplan practice tests). With Knewton, I earned 460 on the diagnostic and then blew the GMAT out of the water with a 630, a huge increase (My highest Knewton test score was 600, so I believe the tests are a little more challenging/useful). I have to say that the questions on the actual GMAT were very much like the ones presented by Knewton, and there were no questions where I hadn't seen that type before.

I can't thank Knewton enough for their online class structure, as the teachers really do acknowledge each student who participates and they will stick with you on problems until you fully figure them out. In addition to the classes, Knewton holds online office hours where they cover questions that you have previously sent in. If you can't attend office hours, they will even send you an mp3 file of their answer to your question.

The explanations of answers given at the end of each assignment are top notch, as well as the ability to retake assignments later on. I found myself constantly going back and reworking assignments, as well as watching archived classes taught by others so I would here the material in a different tone and that really helped me out.

Overall, I don't think there is a better program out there than Knewton, especially for the money and discounts are easy to find. The only thing I found it lacking was the ability to create customized assignments like Kaplan offers, but the other features such as Knewton's Law that creates custom lessons for you more than made up for it.

Knewton's website has to be the most user friendly site out there. It is very intuitive and takes little time to learn. There is no wasting time figuring out what buttons to press and which rooms to enter; you simply logon and let your eyes do the walking!

The Knewton staff is second to none. They are extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and have a somewhat twisted and nerdy sense of humor that suits me well!

I found both the verbal and quant courses to be quite useful. In particular, the section on sentence correction was very beneficial on the verbal side, and number properties and testing cases was very informative on the quant side.

There were a sufficient number of what I would consider challenging questions and my only qualm would be that perhaps a little more emphasis on intermediate questions would be more helpful than spending a great amount of time on very challenging and unique question sets.

The Knewton CATS were very strongly correlated to my perfomance on the official GMAT and I thought they were a good preparation for the official test.

Overall the experience was a very positive one. I cannot stress enough how responsive, friendly, and warm the Knewton staff are. Howework questions are responded to very quickly and explained in great detail.

I would not hesitate to refer a friend, family member or colleague to the folks at Knewton!

Great overall experience to build solid foundation of skills and tricks to tackle GMAT

The overall class was great, I enjoyed my teachers (David Gordon for verbal, and I forgot my quant teacher's name), they made it easy to follow along. I've taken the GMAT once before, and really struggled with verbal. The course helped me identify what I needed to look for ("tells") and brought up my 2nd practice exam to the 92nd percentile! I'm really happy with that progress.

Quant is a different story - i felt that there were so many items to cover that I was overwhelmed with the information. I think the class went a little too fast, and zoomed over some of the more foundational items to get to the tips and tricks. It might be beneficial to focus more time on the foundational elements, and then teach quant strategy (i.e. guessing strategy) after everything else has been taught.

The environment was great, but if I joined a live classroom (or even an on-demand course) via wireless, the feed lagged quite a bit and I feel I may have missed some important points. I had to exit and re-enter the classroom a few times which took away from the experience. Seeing how wifi is available almost everywhere, it might be prudent to check in on how the bandwidth issue can be fixed so the streaming is seamless (which I'm sure you already are working on).

I definitely will refer Knewton to future GMAT takers. I have no doubt I will get at least a 50 point increase!

Thanks,
Kevin
