Knewton forces you to think smarter when approaching a standardized test.

Rather than just improving math & verbal skills, Knewton help you to identify what type of question you are seeing and how best to tackle it.

Once you finish the course, you will be able to see a math question and realize that its the same type of problem you've seen before, only the numbers have changed.

For verbal questions, you can spot the "tells" and prepare your answer choices appropriately.

I believe the on-demand courses are excellent for people who are busy and cannot attend the live classes. The online content, progress information, etc. are tailored to enable the student to know eher they stand and to decide if they are ready for the actual test. The student instructors are great, courteous and quick to respond to inquiries. I highly recomend this course.

How Online Learning Makes Things Easier on the Test Taker

I gave this course a five star review because it did exactly that - greatly exceeded expectations.

I want to begin by saying when I took the SAT four years ago, I took a Princeton Review course. I was left very disheartened for the price tag. It was essentially a guy just guiding me through their books. I am self motivated so I could've easily done this myself.

Knewton is different. The lectures are very engaging. Even though I am strong at Math, I rarely feel bored during the math lectures. There is always a little tid bit they highlight that I want to pay extra attention towards! Verbal is fantastic. They really break down everything for you on each of the sections and then the homework assignments you get reemphasize the lessons you've learned

Knewton is extremely convenient - I am able to pause the lesson when needed, rewind it if I didn't quite understand or pay attention. I can't emphasize how useful this ability is to me.

Another big benefit of Knewton is how realistic the questions are. They have literally reversed engineered the entire test - it is very powerful stuff.

Results are very important - though I'm still in the middle of my GMAT course I raised my initial score from 580 (completely cold, have never seen/taken the GMAT before) to 680 in about 10 days of good pretty intense studying. I'm now on week 7 so only halfway through the course.

I HIGHLY recommend this course. I can't say enough about how great it is, and the price is simply unbeatable.

The Knewton GMAT prep program has considerably improved my confidence level to take the GMAT tests. I started of with a very low diagnostic test score. But after I had taken up one complete course of Knewton classes, by scores in the practice tests have improved. The online classes are very flexible (watch live classes or its recording at your own schedule) and the faculty dwell deep into the basic concepts. The strategies suggested were quite handy in tackling toughies. All concepts have also been explained very precisely in the personalized Knewton website.

The one year membership was quite a good deal. Overall, the Knewton program was a great investment and I am sure I will achieve my desired GMAT score.

Thank you Knewton!!!

Going into the GMAT, I knew I needed a course to help me get over the 700 mark. My major problem going in was that I have a difficult and unpredictable work schedule, so I needed a course that would allow me to go at my own pace and attend classes when my schedule permitted. Knewton was perfect for this since they allowed me to view archived classes when I wasn't able to make it to a scheduled class. Because I was jumping around the archived classes, I viewed classes with a number of different teachers and found all of them to be excellent. The classes were all well-structured and packed with great ways to approach different question types. Overall, I felt very well prepared going into the GMAT after taking the Knewton course.

The only major criticism I have for the course was that the scoring algorithm on the practice tests was all over the place. I did some research while I was taking the course and it seemed like a number of other people had the same complaint. I'm not sure if the scoring algorithm has been updated--I took the course about a year ago--but at the time they defended their scoring saying it was accurate. I still highly recommend Knewton, but it's worth pointing out as an apparent weakness in the course.

I took the Knewton course and sat for the GMAT right after finishing the course. My score is a little surprising--I scored 44 in quant and 30 in verbal as I thought my biggest improvement was in verbal. I am disappointed with my verbal score, I was consistently scoring in the high 30s in the Knewton CATs.

I do think that my 90 point score increase is significant, even though I know I could have scored in the upper 600s. I give a lot of credit to Knewton for my improvement and Adam in particular who is a great teacher!

I Should've Been A Knerd Sooner

Let's see... this might be a case of tl;dr for some, but bear with me:

Prior to signing up for Knewton, I was bent on doing self-study. I had all sorts of books, guides, etc., but for some odd reason I wasn't meeting my goals. Being a baseball fan, I wanted to join what I fondly referred to as "The 40-40 Club." (In baseball, a player joins the "40-40 Club" upon hitting 40 home runs and stealing 40 bases in a single season. It's actually a pretty cool feat.) Anyway, in terms of the GMAT, I wanted to achieve 40s for both Quant and Verbal. Since I was in the mid-500 to low-600 territory, I knew that achieving this goal would require work, focus, and a little something extra. Enter Knewton.

I went into my Knewton course with an open mind. Yes, I knew some of the GMAT tricks and such, but the one thing I wanted to do going in was to simplify my approach to the GMAT. Since I did self-study prior to Knewton, I felt that all the books and guides I ever came in contact with did more to muddle my mind than to create a sense of clarity and ease. Basically, there was too much going on. So what happened with Knewton? Exactly what I had expected.

The Knewton course and instructors like Adam, Jason, and Chris really worked to simplify the GMAT approach and make content/concepts stick. These three instructors were engaging and methodical in their approach. They took the time in class to answer questions and clarify certain concepts for those willing to speak up. Furthermore, they really stress trusting the methods they present and teach, instead of you or me going back to our old test-taking habits.

Anyway, the course ran smoothly for me, and I was able to finish all six practice tests, as well as all of the homework and extra practice content. The amount of content can be mind boggling, so when you go through them, try to keep a reasonable pace. Don't try to do everything in one weekend. It probably won't happen.

In terms of practice tests, I was scoring lower than my actual GMAT score post-Knewton, however I didn't let those results get to me. My Quant scores were lower than normal, while my Verbal scores kept creeping up. This was good though, since I wanted to see some progress in that regard. After taking all of the Knewton practice tests, I decided to check my progress through the GMAT Prep tests. Sure enough, I was consistently breaking the 40/40 barrier and hitting 670 - 690.

So why did I end up with just a 670? hah! I blame it on Test Day jitters. But nah, I'm satisfied with my score, especially since I did achieve my initial goal of joining the "40-40 Club." With that said, it's almost time to start cranking out those essays. Thanks, Knewton!

As an attorney who has not taken a math class in 10 years, it was absolutely vital that I become reacquainted with math if I figure to have any shot to enter the business school of my choice. I was initially a bit skeptical about online learning and questioned whether enrolling in Knewton would be worth it. I can now say that it was more than worth every penny. Knewton provides you with an amazing array of tools to assist you in your continual development. It's smart design adapts to inform you of your strengths and weaknesses and helps you focus on areas that really trouble you. The class sessions are super informative and taught by individuals who are not only intelligent but also skilled in helping the most basic learner to apply the concepts that are being taught. My experience with Knewton has been excellent and I genuinely believe that the price of the course is an enormous bargain. I'd recommend it to anyone lerious about their preparation for the GMAT.

Knewton brought it all together for me - 710 (+160)

June 27, 2011

I took the GMAT to gain entrance to a PhD program. For my first attempt I studied from a couple of books and was very under-prepared. I knew I wasn't ready to take the test but I had already scheduled, paid and missed the cancel deadline for the GMAT. Add in the holidays and the flu and it went bad, I got a 550 on my first attempt.

After a break and then some research I decided on Knewton's course to help me study for attempt 2. Originally I had signed up for a competitors in person course but decided to save a weekly 150 mile round trip and about $700. After reading reviews and sampling the product I chose Knewton (the price was lower too).

I started in April and immediately liked the structure and the teachers. I would highly recommend Jen Rugani and Rich Zwelling. The best part was the structure the twice a week lessons provided. I needed to regain confidence and build my skills. The step by step approach worked great. Each week Rich and Jen took us a little further with fun and some dancing (yup, dancing - check it out). I completed all of the weekly requirements, did quite a bit of the extra homework and gave it my all.

After completing my 13 session course I had about three weeks before my exam date. I reviewed all video lessons (with different instructors) and spent more time listening and taking notes. I also took all 6 Knewton CAT's and 1 CAT at MBA.com. My scores were somewhat sporadic, which puzzled me. However, I was doing great on the homework and gained real confidence in how to take GMAT questions. I liked all of the other instructors but the live interaction with Rich and Jen was the best.

I also used an 8th grade Algebra book to simply work algebra drills and the week before my 2nd test I worked through the Kaplan books that I had used for try 1.

All said, I took the test and scored:
Quant, 48 - 82nd percentile
Verbal, 40 - 89th percentile
Total, 710, 92d percentile

A major improvement over a 550.

I would (and have) highly recommend the course. Use my name and I get $50 :) through Knewton's referral system. Questions, e-mail me.

Rapid fire top flight test prep

I had only one month to prepare for the GMAT so I took the Knewton accelerated program. Given that I was rusty on mathematical concepts (10 years out of school), I really needed the help to reintroduce myself to old concepts as well as the format of the GMAT. When I took the initial practice test, I did not score very well; however, as the class progressed, my scores continued to get better. Knewton's method and recommendations regarding how to properly prep for the test over the month, much like a boxer's training regime, proved valuable. The practice materials along with supplementary problems were more than sufficient preparation. Furthermore, Knewton's staff was always at the ready to answer questions via email 24/7. During the actual GMAT, Knewton's words of advice regarding pacing and pitfalls made a significant difference on my performance. I scored higher on the actual GMAT than any of my practice tests. Finally, Knewton is a incredible value compared to other test prep services. In conclusion, I gained admission as well as scholarships from a variety of MBA programs due in part to my GMAT score which would not have been possible without training from Knewton.

I work quite a few hours a week and absolutely did not have the time to sign up for a Princeton Review or Kaplan course so Knewton's on demand class schedule was perfect! I felt as though I was getting a true lecture, but on my own time and liked the ability to pause classes so I could take notes or even get up to stretch.

The substantial amount of homework and practice questions Knewton offers is also a huge plus. The hw questions were are all written in test format so you gain practice with timing and structure while learning the concepts.

Knewton's customer service is also incredibly helpful. I emailed the team on a few occasions and I always had a response in my inbox in a few hours. I can really tell they care about the customer experience and truly care about how their students do.

I didn't get my target score the first time I took the GMAT, but I am going to continue to use Knewton until I do!

If I had any friends who asked where they should take a GMAT course, I would recommend Knewton. I work 9-5 Monday through Friday and I didn't want to take a class away from home as it would have been difficult to only be home a few hours every night. The classes are twice a week for 3 hours each day and if you sign up for the on-demand course, you can watch a taped video of the class whenever you want!

But the best part about this class is that it tells you what subjects you're having problems with and you can review. Also, the teachers are helpful and it seems like they really care about the students performing well on the tests.

Knewton Review

June 27, 2011
  • Teacher:
  • Recommended forVerbal: Yes  Math: Yes
  • GMAT ScoresBefore: N/A After: 710

*The Good
1) Archived Classes: This was huge for me. I really liked being able to
choose which instructor I wanted to hear from, since I took the course from
Japan and didn't sit in on a single live class.
2) Instructors: As a whole, I thought the people teaching the course
understood the program very well, and gave some very key tools for how to
improve your score. Prior to taking the course, I had done some studying
through the Princeton Review's GMAT book, and found your course to be far
more helpful in breaking down how the test was structured, what was going to
be tested, and what hard information and techniques you needed to know to
best improve your score. In particular, I thought that David Ingber did an
awesome job. That guy quickly and accurately explained all of the concepts
and answers to questions that I was interested in. Brevity should be more
encouraged with other teachers.
3) Essay Feedback: I sent in one set of my test essays to Knewton, and got
detailed feedback from them that improved my score from a 5.0/5.5 on the
ones I sent in to a 6.0 for the ones I submitted on test day.

*The Bad
1) The Reliability of the Website: I e-mailed the Knewton support network on
several occasions to tell them that certain math problems weren't displaying
properly (ie., couldn't tell that a number was being raised to a certain
power) or that I couldn't log on/view archived courses. I wound up not
having any more issues with the problems being displayed improperly after
the first couple of sessions, but not being able to log in or get into the
classroom for a couple of hours at a time was very frustrating and was a
continual issue.

*The Ugly
1) The Tests: I found the Knewton exams to be an unreliable estimation of my GMAT score. Here's a rundown on how I did:
Diagnostic GMAT - never finished this one.
Knewton GMAT 1, May 30: 5 wrong quant (45), 5 wrong verbal (43): 710
Knewton GMAT 2, June 20: 7 wrong quant (44), 8 wrong verbal (32): 630
Knewton GMAT 3, July 4: 4 wrong quant (44), 8 wrong verbal (31): 620
Knewton GMAT 4, July 10: 11 wrong quant (42), 9 wrong verba (35): 620
Official GMAT CAT 1: July 17: 11 wrong quant, 4 wrong verbal: 750
Actual GMAT: July 20: quant (47), verbal (44) 730

As you can see, it varied pretty wildly, and so I had no real clear idea on how well I was going to do come test day.

Knewton has advantages

I didn't take the live course so I can only comment on the online activities. My score did increase greatly; however, I can't attribute all of that to Knewton. What is great about the course is that it does pinpoint the questions that you missed in homework assignments and reassigns those types of problems again. However, I will say there are not enough problems overall within the course. I only had 6 weeks before my exam and ran out of questions about week 4 and a half. There should be a data bank of questions by type, not just a 50 or so, but far more to dive into when a student has a weakness in that area.

The tests are a good measure of the real test - not easier or more difficult. It is strange that the writing component is not integrated into the beginning of the test - this automatically makes the practice tests far from the real experience.

The question types were good and the verbal questions were rigorous. The videos on the blog were also very helpful in givings tips and strategies to speed up. I think these videos that are relevant to particular lessons should be linked into each lesson for quick view when a student is struggling on a concept or simply wants to get faster. Otherwise I think these videos are being lost on the site when they are one of the better resources there.
