Overall not a bad little class. I thought it was expensive but what GMAT prep course isn't? I enjoyed that I could do it on my schedule - I enjoyed having the option to sit down and go through the live sessions on my time. Even if I missed a session I could always turn back to a recorded version. I also enjoyed the use of technology both within the lecture and outside of the lecture: the homework and the GMAT practice tests help refine my skills and show my progression from the beginning of the course to the end. I thought the instructors were very informative and they seemed to genuinely enjoy teaching the course and were willing to help out.

Mostly used archives, practices aren't a great indicator

I chose Knewton for their 50 point guarantee (I would have been thrilled with a 50 point bump from my initial 700). After getting a 740 on their initial test, Knewton's policies essentially guaranteed me a 790 or better, or my money back. Not bad, if you ask me. In the end, I only improved to a 730, and I experienced no hassle at all from Knewton's staff regarding my refund, and their customer service is excellent. Overall, I would rate the quality of the instruction and the coursework as very good. Knewton's weak spots are their practice testing/scoring algorithms (well documented in the forums) and an occasionally oblique explanation for practice questions.

None of Knewton's class times were convenient for me, so I did nearly all of my classes via the archived sessions, which seemed to work ok, I seldom had any questions that weren't addressed in the lesson.

Their practice tests did not seem like a great indicator of GMAT performance. My initial practice gave me a 740, numbers 3 and 4 were 660 and 680 if I recall correctly. The first time I took the GMAT I got a 700, after the course I got a 730.

The classes were well focused, and all of the teachers were quite good, and very supportive. The pace seemed a bit slow at times, but it was a minor inconvenience. The explanations given after a wrong answer in the "homework" were generally good enough to understand your mistake, but there were times when I was still convinced of my answer even after reading the explanation of the problem.

Knewton is a great place to START your GMAT prep

I'd been thinking about studying for the GMAT on and off for the last two years but felt completely overwhelmed whenever I'd take a practice CAT.

I signed up for the Knewton class when Knewton was running a promotion (later I would kick myself and shake a fist at Knewton when I found that the price for the class was much, much lower on BeattheGMAT.com and GMATclub.com).

I had really tried to take the class in one of the live sessions, but it was way too much for me (4 hours of class 2x/week plus homework and pre-class work). I appreciated all the different assignments and relevant materials, but the timeline was very accelerated for me and my full-time job. I ended up taking most of the classes on-demand. Knewton was just rolling this out as I was starting. The technology isn't perfect, but it is a great way to take a class at your own pace.

Pros:
-The classes were a great way to finally get serious about prepping for the test. For me, I really needed a way to go back to the basics and work through the elementary math at an appropriate pace.
-Knewton provided the structure of a GMAT class with the flexibility of a study-on-your-own-time program.
-In addition, the syllabus and dashboard are set up in a way that makes it easy to track progress and plan ahead.
-The instructors are great. I have no idea how they do it (are they reading from a teleprompter?) but they are able to explain problems and information in a really digestible way.

Cons:
-I thought the class was about 3 weeks too long. By the end, I wasn't finding the material nearly as helpful. I think you get almost everything you need (from Knewton) out of the first 7-8 or so weeks.
-I didn't feel totally prepared to take the test after I finished the class. Upon completion, I spent about 3 more weeks really digging in to materials from other companies (e.g., Kaplan, Manhattan GMAT).
-Knewton doesn't have any offline materials or workbooks. I think those could have been great supplements to the online program. (FYI - for additional math and SC materials, check out the Manhattan GMAT workbooks).

All in all, Knewton was a great way to get serious about studying. My score went from 530 at the start of the Knewton process to 670 at the end. After the few weeks of additional review (without looking back at any of the Knewton materials) my score increased another 70 points.

Takeaway: I'd recommend it (at the REAL promotional price) as one component of GMAT prep to anyone looking for a way to get serious about studying.

Convenient course for busy people; good value; enthusiastic teachers

June 25, 2011

I enjoyed my Knewton online course and would highly recommend it for people that can't or don't want to spend valuable study time commuting to a class. I travel extensively for work and while I made a point of getting to almost every class, I appreciated being able to go back and review the lessons that I had to miss or needed extra practice on. Jen and Rich are both enthusiastic, articulate instructors and they and the other TAs were responsive to student questions and did a good job of explaining the concepts. Many of the extra office hours have been helpful and addressed particularly tough questions, and I found the Knewton team at [email protected] both quick to respond as well as thorough when answering my questions. For instance, I emailed them a few essays for feedback and got a lengthy response the following day which provided quite helpful feedback.

I didn't review exclusively with Knewton - I used some other review materials to get started before I signed up for the course. I found the Knewton materials to be more helpful than a lot of products, although I hope that the algorithm is a bit off because I recently got mid-700s on an official mba.com practice test but low 600s on a few of the Knewton exams! In terms of price, I thought it was a good value for the money and was nice to get a discount that also included free practice tests from GMAT Club (which I have definitely utilized).

Unfortunately, I was feeling very poorly on test day (I took the risk of sitting for the test a few days after being in the emergency room with a stomach bug) so I was stressed out on the math and worn out by the time I got to the verbal section where I often score near the top. I did get 6.0 AWA essay scores, at least :) I'll be retaking in a little over a month once I drill a bit more math, and at least Knewton has the 50-point guarantee...

I had taken the GMAT first with little knowledge of what to expect. After I scored a 530, I realized that I need to take it again. I needed more help than a book. A friend recommended that I check out Knewton's course. I loved the real-time interactive classes, and the recorded video presentations. The teachers were excited to be there, and they looked like they had fun teaching. They taught me what to expect and the logic behind the questions presented on the GMAT. I got a 700 after I had gone through only a portion of the course!

My weak areas were very effectively addressed by the course content, excellent teaching (Allison rocks!!!) and practice exercises. The hand holding offered by the support staff is second to none and all my queries were addressed within 24 hours! Without Knewton it would have taken me significantly more effort to cross the 750 barrier. Thanks for the technology infrastructure, delivery methodology and execution I was able to attend Knewton without being disadvantaged by my location. It surely is a great novel idea backed by right technology and supported by great people that provide an excellent service to help realize the true potential of its customer.

As guaranteed I increased my score by 50 points! Knewoton rocks!!!

I've been out of school for a few years. Knewton's course lessons and review helped me re-establish fundamentals in math and verbal. The course is very structured; however, I went at my own pace and completed the coursework in a shorter period of time. There are 6 CATs included which were fairly predictive of my own score.

The video lessons are quite engaging and were more interesting than I thought they would be to follow.

I want to congratulate the people at Knewton because they have gone through a real evolution in the GMAT prep market.

I have taken private tutoring in Mexico City and in NY City and the Knewton course.

The Knewton will always win in content, style, and resources. Teachers are fantastic!!! Fun, down to earth and extremely good!!!

Not only that, is cheaper. For 6 months of private tutoring in Mexico I paid 1000 usd, in Manhatan Review I paid 1000 usd for ten hours. For Knewton I paid 450 usd for a year.

So ... Best clases, better courses, less expensive ... The best option!!!

The only negative point would be that advance math material is not enough or not as sptialized, so if you want to go for 99 percentile in math you will need additional resources ( that is why I went Manhattan Review)

Best of lucks to Knewton and every GMAT taker!!!

Knewton - Great Systematic approach to studying for the GMAT

June 25, 2011
  • Teacher:
  • Recommended forVerbal: Yes  Math: Yes
  • GMAT ScoresBefore: N/A After: 730

I really liked Knewton because it has a structured approach to going through all the GMAT material and also makes you take pre and post homework quizzes. The website actually takes the results of your quizzes and analyzes where you are going wrong -- this is something that I don't believe any other course offers and one that I found extermely useful to decide where I should focus my studying efforts on.

The other thing that was convenient was that you have the option of either joining in live course or instead watch recorded online course with 3 different instructors (you can choose based on whose style you like). The good thing with the live-course is that they have questions during the course and see how everyone is doing, and explain why the wrong answer choices are wrong. But since I was working at that time, I found the pre-recorded one more convenient.

The other important thing with the GMAT is that there are different levels of mastering it. First-level will be just getting familiar, and then second you will want to improve your technical knowledge, and third you will want to know all the tips and tricks, which is something that gives you the "edge".

Scoring well on the GMAT will take a long time...and Knewton gives you one-year to take it so take full advantage of it.

Plus Knewton has the 50-point money-back guarantee, which they really do honor, hassle-free, so you have nothing to lose :)

For a slacker like me who hates standardized tests, Knewton held my hand and led me towards a good GMAT score.

Knewton?s style of using online video classes to teach is the best approach to gmat prep that I have noticed since I started my gmat journey in 2006. After using books to prepare without much improvement, i signed up for knewton and since then, my performance on practice test has not been the same. Although I?m yet to re-take my actual gmat which I bombed the last time due to rush to meet admission deadline, I know from every indications that my next actual gmat score will be great. I never knew that data sufficiency and reading comprehension , my weakest areas ,had very reliable strategies for acing the test until I signed up for knewton. After watching the data sufficiency class video, it was an ??AHA?? moment for me.
Right now I?m solving OG 12 and taking gmatprep CATs to master official gmat questions before I take my actual gmat in a month?s time. Jen Rugani and Dave Ingber, you guys are exceptional teachers.

Jen and Chris got me into Kellogg

June 24, 2011
  • Teacher: Jen Rugani and Chris Wu

My first hap-hazard attempt at a practice GMAT with no studying or review resulted in a score in the low 500s. My target school, Kellogg, had an average entrance admission score somewhere in the low 700s. Though I could have purchased review books and studied myself or enrolled in a classroom course to bridge the 200 point gap, I felt that the the books wouldn't be structured enough and the class would be too time-consuming and expensive.

I was referred to Knewton by law school admissions counselor - at the time, I was considering going to law school, but decided business school made more sense for my career goals. Knewton's online classes and on-demand viewing of old classes allowed me to finish the course in the 8-week time frame I had before my GMAT deadline, and the quality of Jen's (verbal) and Chris's (quant) instruction combined with the large catalog of practice problems, homework, and sample exams, brought my best practice score up to a 720. I also made use of the writing section instruction videos, submitted my writing to a Knewton grader, and got top scores on both essays.

Though I didn't ever need to ask the instructors for help, I did from time to time ask the general help folks for guidance as to which personalized practice lessons I should conquer, and they were always quick to respond with excellent information. I also want to point out that I watched one of Jose's "What can an MBA do for you" seminars and learned a great deal about rankings and how to interpret them, as well as what to expect from business school in general. I found this to be invaluable.

Finally, on test day, I felt that the test was presenting me with challenging problems, which, on practice tests, meant that I was doing well. Though 720 represented my best practice test score, I knew that I shouldn't necessarily expect to receive that score. As it happens though, when I got the printout of my score as I was leaving the testing center, it was a 720, and I couldn't have been happier.

Since finishing Knewton, I applied and got in to the Kellogg part time MBA program and I'm part-way through my 5th and 6th of 20 classes toward my MBA.

I am not your typical GMAT-taker. I am a 41 year old mother of two. I haven't taken English or Math courses for over 20 years. When I started with Knewton, my first practice test was 490. I was hoping at that time to get a 550 by the time I took the test the first time. Well, I had so much fun studying. The classes were great. I started out with the "live" classes, but since I only gave myself exactly 2 months to study, I switched to the taped classes. Either way was great. It was nice to repeat some specific topics I needed more help on. I also emailed my practice essays for review and the response was fast and very detailed. I highly recommend Knewton. I am so glad I took the class. My alma mater received my score and offered me full tuition waiver (Top 20 school). WooHoo.

I chose Knewton's GMAT course because I was drawn to its company culture and the passion the teachers demonstrated. Having worked in the test prep industry, I understood that big brand names don't always mean much to the students. When I saw the adaptive learning technology from Knewton, I knew that it was something new and it could make my learning experience more personal.

The course exceeded my expectations. The teachers were very articulate, able to explain the concepts in a simple way and carried a very amicable character. The adaptive learning platform helped me with my own weaknesses and the social connection during the live class added some fun factor to the course. The flexible studying time and internet access allowed me to study according to my own schedule.

Because of my own work and personal schedule, I haven't been able to take the GMAT yet. Although I can't say how much the course has helped me score wise, I do feel that through the course, I developed a deeper and better understanding of GMAT itself, my own weaknesses and the strategies to study for it.

I would definitely recommend Knewton GMAT prep course to my friends and family who're preparing for the GMAT.

The class sessions themselves are enough to help achieve confidence with the test questions, but the great thing about Knewton is that you can always dig deeper into a subject area and learn more if you need to. The instructors and staff are always available to answer questions and provide guidance whenever necessary. Knewton is serious about tracking progress and giving students the tools they need to succeed on the GMAT. Intuitive, Efficient, Convenient, and Powerful Learning Experience

June 24, 2011

Between both living abroad and keeping a busy schedule, the Knewton format was by far the best solution. I could access the coursework any time, and move at my own pace. Previously, I had tried both Manhattan (online courses + books) and Princeton Review (classroom course) before taking the GMAT the first time; but it was only after going through Knewton that I really grasped the material, which was reflected on my second GMAT score.

The user interface and experience was simple, yet comprehensive -- I certainly didn't exhaust the full array of features at my disposal. Navigating the service, pulling up videos, checking my progress, and doing the exercises was straight-forward. The website takes care of the rest, which allowed me to focus 100% on the most important thing: learning the content.

The content (which you can download and save) is definitively superior to that of Manhattan and Princeton Review, having been through both courses. I found it more intuitive and better preparation for the real exam, namely because the questions more accurately reflected the test material.

Moreover, the Knewton coursework endows students with a fuller set of tools to conquer questions at all difficulties of the test (500, 600 to 700+ type questions). You actually come away from the course will a real, hard set of frameworks to think about and solve the questions efficiently.

The commonly-heard criticism against Manhattan is that too much time is spent reviewing the hardest material -- which might only constitute a few questions at the end of each section -- which doesn't give students the foundation to cruise effortlessly through the easy stuff at the beginning. If improving your score from 720 to 760 is the goal, Manhattan might very well be the best fit. On the other hand, Princeton is the opposite, as it ensure a 600+ score but won't give students the means to surpass 700 consistently. After taking both courses, I feel both characterizations are accurate.

Knewton, however, gave me the full framework and training, teaching me to solve problems at every level. I developed an approach that can be universally applied and built upon to solve problems at every level of the test.

Like many students, I tried a multitude of services, and Knewton was by far the best. It had the most resources and exercises, the best teachers, a convenient "on demand" delivering of service, and lastly, the price tag versus the competition speaks for itself.

I am taking the GMAT prep course with Knewton online at the moment and I love it! The classes can be taken live with a live teacher or watch previously recorded classes "On Demand" so its great! Jen, Rich, Jess are great teachers! I love the live classes because the teachers and students are interacting with each other (and they call on you in class by name!) and you can ask questions in the chat or privately and you can switch sections as much as you want so you can watch the same class with different teachers in the same week. The progress charts are great too to see where I need more improvement on. I've taken a few practice tests and the explainations on why I got a problem incorrect are very detailed and helpful! I would recommend Knewton to everyone! I hope to take the GMAT at the end of July!
